I've had supposedly the best Philly Cheesesteak in Philadelphia, Pat's King of Steaks, and walked away
disappointed knowing now that it is truly a tourist
trap and difficult to reach at that. Yet the lure remains of finding a great Philly Cheesesteak both in Philly city as well as outside, especially outside of Pennsylvania. The problem is that it gets hard to even find establishments that offer decent ones.
It just so happens that Grant's in Portland offers a great Philly sandwich that puts Pat's to shame. In NE Portland, this is a shack that you'll easily miss driving along Sandy. The sign on the post jutting about the building is faded to white.
The Original I had was half sized at a quarter over $6 and it was too small. I should have ordered the whole. This was takeout that I took a bite into over a half hour after it was ordered. It would have been fantastic piping hot but as it was, it was a quantum leap better than Pat's.
I don't know if there's a better Philly Cheesesteak in Portland but I'm happy to stick with Grant's.
Update January 2013
I returned for the full size. It was worth it. Give it a few minutes to rest to let the flavors meld. I took a bite too soon and burnt my tongue.
As much as I like their Phillys, I believe their Tillamook Chicken Steak sandwich is even more memorable and better. But why choose? Order both!
