Delux - Phoenix, AZ

Delux has a reputation for serving one of the best burgers in Phoenix.  On a mid afternoon well after the usual  lunch hour crunch, I had a opportunity to stop in and enjoy the place almost to myself with fast prompt service.

The Delux Burger

This didn't smack me with a sense of beauty or awe upon arrival. I thought it too dainty.  Delux recommends it medium rare, I had ordered it medium rare, and it arrive medium rare. However for a thin to medium thickness patty like this, medium rare doesn't work because the outside is merely browned, lacking the time required to give it a desirable lighted charred crust.

The patty was too much on the cool side and a hotter exterior would have been preferred.  The patty was moist, juicy, and tender but leaning on the airy side. The burger had a moderately beefy taste but even more prominent was the caramelized onion. The bacon flavor was always in the background, not dominant but getting notice.  The arugula provided for a chewy and occasionally stinging note.

  • Bun:  demi-baguette.  It was a little drier, heftier, and chewy than I anticipated.
  • Toppings: caramelized onions & small bits of applewood smoked bacon, baby arugula
  • Cheese:  Gruyere and Maytag bleu
  • Meat: Niman Ranch all natural grain feed
  • Price: $10.95
  • Rating: 9.0.
Restroom Rating:  Dark, very dark. It seemed cleaned but it was hard to tell with the lighting.  The bathroom sink are outside the water closets and shared.
