S&L is a local dive with some of the friendliest waitresses that pay detailed attention to your needs. It's located in an older section of town and it's a local restaurant where the locals eat. It's unfortunate it's only open for breakfast and lunch but I suppose being in an industrial part of the city, traffic is lighter during the evening hours. At lunch time, a constant stream of white plastic bagged takeout orders covered the counter.
Inevitably every time I order a burger medium it arrives between medium well to well done. S&L prepared this order to an absolutely perfect pink! The waitress even asked if it was cooked medium. I replied with an enthusiastic yes.
There's nothing fancy about this burger but it's your basic indulgent greasy spoon bacon cheeseburger done right. The old saw goes you never know what you've been missing until you've had X and in this case X is this greasy spoon burger in which all the components meld together for grilled greatness.
- Bun: Standard white. Even though it doesn't look it, the bun to patty ratio was perfect. The bun held together from start to finish.
- Toppings: Bacon, lettuce, tomatoes, ketchup?, mustard? The lettuce tasted fresh enough although its pale yellow appearance would indicate otherwise.
- Cheese: American
- Meat: 6 to 8 oz of ?. Great char test but missing just a bit of round flavor (umami) to take it to the best of the best class
- Price: $5.15 including the fries. A world class burger that a poor man can afford.
- Rating: 9.4
