La Tolteca - Wilmington, DE

La Tolteca is situated in a strip mall along the busy Concord Pike. It was surprisingly busy this evening all thing considered.

Wanting something lighter than usual, I was leaning heavily on the fish fillet but settled instead for Camarones a la Diabla consisting as their menu says of large size shrimp (10) cooked with special herbs and spices, served with rice, “La casa” salad and tortillas (2) flour.

I suppose large is large if you're use to eating popcorn shrimp but for me large is at least 3 to 3-1/2 in in length, more on the 21 count end rather than the 30 count end side. I considered the shrimp medium sized.  The shrimp came covered in a heavy sauce which I assume was cream based as it was rich and thick.  Due to the spiciness, I was unable to distinguish any particular herbs or spices in the sauce.  The sauce was nicely seasoned providing flavor in addition to the heat.  The shrimp was a tad overcooked which left the shrimp a little stringy and dry. The rice and salad provided relief from the sauce and were welcome tasty additions.

Overall it was an average preparation, not distinguishing itself yet doing no harm.

Restroom Rating:  7.4  Clean and bright. Unexpected
