Portillo's Hot Dogs - Chicago, IL
Portillo's doesn't post its hours as far as I could tell but the locals certainly knew what time Portillo's opened. It was 10 AM and just after we put in an order, a crowd consisting of hungry construction seemingly workers came out of the woodwork.
We were on a River North sampling mission today and we were at Portillo's strictly for a Chicago dog even though they offer burgers, Italian beef, and a whole lot more.
Hot Dog with mustard, relish, freshly chopped onions, sliced red ripe tomatoes, kosher pickle, and sport peppers piled onto a steamed poppy seed bun. That was a great hot dog, one of the best that I can recall. If it had a nit, it would be the pickle was a little oversized and dominated in the flavor department as well as making bites difficult of all components equally a challenge. The sports pepper added a veritable kick to the tongue. The hot dog was meaty, beefy, and flavorful. The tomatoes were sweet and the bun perfectly soft. No ketchup, not needed.
If this hot dog is representative of Portillo's, not only would I love to return but I'd love to try all their other offerings. Why can't Portillo's be located in my neighborhood?
Restroom Rating: 8.4. Surprisingly clean and well maintained considering the traffic.
