Open breakfast and lunch, Johnny's is another New Orleans institution where long lines are the norm. As with many other restaurants in New Orleans, the questions asked are "Is it worth the wait?" and "Does it live up to the hype?"
This is a Special that includes a 1/2 Po-Boy of limited choice, a cup of Gumbo, and a fountain drink. This was one of the better deals.
I chose the Shrimp Po-Boy. The bread was light, porous, both crunchy and soft. The shrimp was fresh but bland. To be dressed was an additional 60 cents. The mayo, tomatoes, and lettuce were left wanting. The Po Boy was decent.
Gumbo. This was the best Gumbo we had tried in New Orleans. We were expecting the Po-Boy to be the best but in an unexpected turn, the Gumbo was the star attraction. The Gumbo was lighter than the other gumbos we had but it was more flavorful and had a lively, bright, spicy flavorful zing.
Bottom line: For the foodie, it's a place you should eat at to say you have. The gumbo certainly was worth the wait.
Restroom Rating: 7.2 Well maintain despite the age and constant use.
