John's Root Beer - Waukesha, WI

I came here with high hopes and walked away disappointed. It must have been an off batch of root beer because despite almost unanimous positive reviews, I found John's root beer to be one of the most insipid root beers if not the most insipid root beer I have ever had.

Where do I start? The root beer lacking carbonation is probably a good place to start. It had only the slightest hint of carbonation detectable to the tongue. It was flat and without carbonation, it's just sugared water. As it came out of the tap, there was no head.  Root beer without a head might as well be root water.

It was tepid.  Seriously, I have had water come out of the kitchen faucet colder than this.  And on a warm day where thirst needed to be quenched, this was a grand disappointment.

The root beer was mostly two note flavor of vanilla and sugar. It lacked the distinctive complexity and depth of herbs and spices in the finest of root beers.  The ubiquitous A&W and Culver's offer much better flavor and at lower cost vs. $1.90 for 16 ounces in a Styrofoam cup.

For those wanting the Dom Perignon of root beers, try Virgil's brewed with a blend of "anise, licorice, vanilla (bourbon), cinnamon, clove, wintergreen, sweet birch, molasses, nutmeg, pimento berry oil, balsam oil and cassia oil".
