Hattie B's Hot Chicken - Nashville, TN

Featured on Bizarre Foods America.

A long line snaking out the doors is usually a good sign the eatery serves outstanding food.  Hattie B's had a long queue but had shortened considerably by the time we had finished and taken this photo.

Parking is extremely limited and we were lucky to snag a open stall.

Southern Chicken in the background.  Medium in the front.  Hattie B's knows how to make chicken and seems to have mastered the frying process, frying it long enough to be thoroughly cooked through yet not overcooked. The chicken had maximum moistness and juiciness.  The chicken was also perfectly salted through, again an art they seemed to have mastered.

The Southern Chicken had no heat. The frying process left the skin almost paper thin, super crispy, and fat free. That was addictively good skin.

The Medium had the perfect level of heat stinging sufficiently to interest the tongue yet not so much that the taste buds were demolished.  The skin wasn't quite as crispy as the chicken was dipped and rolled in the hot sauce after the frying process.

Hattie B's is known for their chicken and not so much the sides.  The sides were satisfactory at best.

So was Hattie B's chicken worth the long wait? As someone who never tried it and wants to see what the hype is about, yes. It was definitely top notch fried chicken, some of best chicken I've had, falling in the Top Twenty or maybe even Top Ten, but it wasn't the best I've had. Would I wait in a long line again for their chicken? It wasn't an OMG experience so now having tried it, no I would not wait in a long line again but I would definitely stop in if the line was short.

Restroom Rating: 7.0. Dirty customers
